How to install a smoke alarm?

You just bought your smoke alarms, but are you aware of where to install them exactly? And do you also know which environmental circumstances do you need to be aware of in your house as such your smoke alarm works perfectly? In a lot of cases smoke detectors are not correctly installed. As a result still a lot of people are not informed in time in case of emergency. In this blog we will inform you on where and when to hang smoke alarms and where and when not to hang smoke detectors.

Where do you install a smoke alarm?

Smoke alarms should be placed high up on the wall or ceiling, as heat and smoke rises. We definitely recommend hanging a smoke alarm in the hall and the landing, as these are the escape routes when a fire breaks out. If you do not want to take any risks with your safety, we recommend placing a smoke alarm in every room of the house.

Ceiling

Ceiling

Place a smoke alarm at the centre of the ceiling, at least 30 centimetres from the walls. In addition, it is important that the smoke alarm is 1 to 3 metres from the potential source of smoke.

Wall

If a smoke alarm cannot be placed on the ceiling, place it on the wall. Install the smoke detector 15 to 80 centimetres from the ceiling, but above doors and windows. Once again, the smoke alarm should be 1 to 3 metres from the potential source of smoke.

In case you have a sloped ceiling, place the smoke alarm on the high side of the sloped ceiling. Again, the smoke alarm should be 1 to 3 metres from the potential source of smoke and it should be placed above the height of your doors and windows.

Bedroom and living room

We also recommend to install a smoke alarm in rooms where you or your family will be present for a longer period of time. It is then important that you hang the smoke alarm at breathing height.
